Lewiston, ME is a rich cultural history. It is a historic “Twin City” located along the Androscoggin River. Its twin city is Auburn, ME, and is on the opposite side of the river. These Maine twin cities are locally known as L-A, or Lewiston/Auburn. Back in the day, Lewiston had a French, or Francophone culture, and was known as “Little Canada”. Much of the French population came down from Canada, many dating back to the late 1700’s when the English expelled French settlers from Nova Scotia. (formerly known as Acadia) . Auburn was more “Anglo”, or English. But both Auburn, ME, and Lewiston, ME have Roman Catholic roots.

Lewiston, ME, is home to the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, locally known as the Cathedral of “Nichols and dimes”, as it was funded and built by local mill workers and laborers. Also, Lewiston, ME, is the home to Bates College, which was the first coeducational college in New England to admit Black students before the Emancipation Proclamation.

Lewiston, ME, also has some boxing history. It hosted the Muhammad Ali vs Sunny Liston rematch in 1965. Lewiston, ME is also the home of WWII veteran Edward Armond LeBlanc, who was an Army Air Corps belly gunner on a B17. LeBlanc was shot down over Germany and spent almost 2 years as a POW. LeBlanc was liberated by the Russians and made his life count, raising 5 children and living a faith-filled and honorable life.
